Hearts Burning Over Easter
As we march through these weeks toward our celebration of Easter, I’d like to mention a couple of verses from Luke 24. This section addresses a time after Jesus had been crucified but before people realized He had risen from the dead. As two disciples of Jesus were walking down the road to the town of Emmaus Jesus met up with them but kept Himself from being recognized. Jesus then joined them in a conversation,
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27)
“Moses and all the prophets” is another way of saying – Old Testament. Jesus was telling these guys how all the stories in the bible: The Noah Story, the Abraham Story, the Moses Story, the Esther Story, the David Story … all the stories were about Him. Jesus explained how the point of every prophet was to reveal the ultimate Prophet who brings us the ultimate truth. The point of the priest was to point us to the ultimate Priest, who brings us all the way into God. The point of every king was to show us the ultimate King, the King of Kings. Jesus explained how everything in the Old Testament (in some sense) was about Himself. Jesus is the New Adam. Jesus is the true Deliverer, the final sacrifice, the fulfillment of the 10 Commandments, the New Covenant, the true and greater King, the true and greater Priest, the true and greater Prophet.
Jesus soon left the men as ‘He disappeared from their sight’. Yet, after hearing Jesus explain the Bible in such a way, the fellows were greatly affected and remarked to each other
“And they said to one another, were not our hearts burning within us when He (Jesus) was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32)
Evidently (and understandably), the hearts of these two guys were ‘burning’ with excitement and emotion as they heard of how Jesus makes all the stories of the Bible come together and how Jesus is the ultimate story they had been reading about in the Bible. With Easter before us and with the empty tomb telling us Jesus is who He said He was and did what He said He would do, we too can have hearts burning with excitement and joy and hope as we know we’re following the right guy, the only Savior, the One whom all of the Bible points to.
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”” (Acts 4:12)
Happy Easter!
