In Christ Alone
“In Christ alone, my hope is found.” Can we ever exalt this phrase high enough?! Of course not, this is at the heart of our Christian confession! As the Reformers reminded us, salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Indeed, let our belief be “Solus Christus.”
I have sought to begin my ministry among you contemplating these “five Solas” of the Reformation not because I want to appear more “Lutheran” than “Evangelical;” or, vice versa. In fact, personally speaking, I want to present the best of both understandings. I recognize these are loaded phrases filled with negative connotations on either side. By God’s grace, we will have time together to grow towards a balanced understanding these terms. All of this is to say, let’s agree to shout it from the rooftops: Salvation is in Christ Alone! This is the foundation and core tenet of our Faith.
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
The testimony of Scripture couldn’t be more clear! Christ Himself, allows us no other interpretation.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John14:6).
And so, let “in Christ Alone” be in our hearts and on our lips. This is the direction I intend to point you always, and I hope you will continue to point me in the way as well. There is no other way that leads to life, though we all die.
Friends, Jesus is your only hope. But take heart; He’s a perfect hope. He’s a sure hope. And He’s an unchanging hope!
Sing it loud: “In Christ Alone, my hope is found. He is my light, my strength, my song…” Truly, our salvation is “Solus Christus.”
God Bless You.
In Christ, Alone,
Pastor Alex Woodworth
