“Magnificat: The Second Song of Christmas”
“And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,” (Luke 1:46–47)
I. The Story Behind Mary’s Song
A. Mary, Enriched With Grace
“The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”” (Luke
1:28)
“Come Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in Thee”
B. Mary, Full of Courage
“‘You will be with child and give birth to a son’ … ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a
virgin?’ … “The Holy Spirit will come upon you …. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of
God …. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:34–38)
II. Mary and Me
A. Every Christian, Highly Favored and Full of Grace
“The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”” (Luke
1:28)
The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35)
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and
eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20)
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I
live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
“Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
“To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is
Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27)
B. Trust and Just Do It
““I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.”
(Luke 1:38)
III. God Fills and Mary Sings
A. Christ Is Working Through Us
“In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!
But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your
greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what
the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”” (Luke 1:42–45)
“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble
state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great
things for me— holy is his name.” (Luke 1:46–49)
B. Christ Has Come to Save The World
“His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds
with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers
from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the
rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his
descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.”” (Luke 1:46–55)
“Come Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in Thee”
