“Road Trip: The First Sign”

“Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish!” (Ephesians 2:8 Message)

  1. Inaugural Sign of Jesus’ Mission

“This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.” (John 2:11)

  1. Lord of the Feast
  2. Gotta Have Wine To Celebrate

“The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan. The gaiety of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent ….  In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all gaiety is banished from the earth.” (Isaiah 24:7–8,11)

“He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens the heart of man” (Psalm 104:14–15)

  1. Jesus The Winemaker

“Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”” (John 2:7–10)

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11)

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

III. Wine Flows As Blood Flows

“When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.” (John 2:3–7)

  1. Mary Submits to Jesus

“And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me?’   … His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”” (John 2:4–5)

  1. Jesus Has His Death On His Mind

“And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”” (John 2:4)

  1. The Wine Was His Blood

“In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:20)
