“The Mighty Man”
I. King David’s Story Lists 37 Mighty Men
“These are the last words of David …. These are the names of David’s mighty men … There were thirty-seven in all.”
(2 Samuel 23:1,8,39)
II. The Three Mighty Men
A. Josheb: Best of the Best of the Best
“These are the names of David’s mighty men: Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against
eight hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.” (2 Samuel 23:8)
B. Eleazar: Always Faithful
“Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines
gathered at Pas Dammim for battle. Then the men of Israel retreated, but he stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand
grew tired and froze to the sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the
dead.” (2 Samuel 23:9–10)
C. Shammah: Doing The Right Thing
“Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of
lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines
down, and the LORD brought about a great victory.” (2 Samuel 23:11–12)
III. Jesus, The True Mighty Man
A. The Bible Story Is About Jesus
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”
(Luke 24:27)
“You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about
me,” (John 5:39)
B. The Good New Is What Jesus Did
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
IV. Three Mighty Men In Action
A. Hearing A Sigh For Hope
“During harvest time, three of the thirty chief men came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped
in the Valley of Rephaim. At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. David longed for water
and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” (2 Samuel 23:13–15)
B. On A Mission From God
“So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to
David.” (2 Samuel 23:16)
C. Assured, All Is Well
“But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD. “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the
blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.”
(2 Samuel 23:16–17)
V. The Mighty Man In Action
A. Jesus Hears Our Sigh For Hope
“Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24–25)
B. He’s On A Salvation Mission

C. In Christ We Are Assured
“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the
Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have
eternal life.” (1 John 5:11–13)
